Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

To produce platelet rich plasma, a blood sample is taken from the horse and processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets within that blood. Platelet rich plasma is most commonly used to treat tendon and ligament injuries, where it can be injected directly into the injured area using ultrasound to guide the needle. PRP has been shown to promote healing by increasing cell migration to the injured area, increasing the proliferation and differentiation of those healing cells, improving the synthesis of matrix, and increasing the production of blood vessels. Tendon and ligament injuries treated with PRP may have improved strength and elasticity, and a lower rate of re-injury.
