Equine Internships

Burwash Equine Services is proud to offer an equine internship program for graduate veterinarians.

We are committed to excellence in the continued training of equine veterinarians, and are excited to offer two equine internship positions for graduate veterinarians. These are year long positions for vets in their first year of practice. Our goal is for interns to become fully competent and confident in general equine practice as they take part in our collaborative team approach to compassionate care. Our current intern class started in June 2023. If you are considering an internship for the 2024/2025 year, we encourage you to complete an externship with us prior to October 2023.

Interns rotate every two weeks between ambulatory and in clinic responsibilities. The majority of cases seen during regular business hours are worked up in conjunction with a senior veterinarian. On call duties are shared at 50%. A senior veterinarian is available for backup call at all times, and is in attendance for emergency referrals throughout the internship, as well as for all after hours calls in the first two months of the internship.

Interns participate in daily case rounds, contribute to journal club, and give two presentations over the course of the internship. The internship is affiliated with the University of Calgary, and as such the interns also participate in grand rounds, teaching labs, and have the opportunity to apply for funding to complete a research project if they so desire.

We are passionate about our interns having an amazing foundational year in equine practice. They work hard, they have solid mentorship that lasts a lifetime, and they also learn skills to succeed in our industry from our veterinarians who balance high quality medicine with time spent competing in equine events, parenting young kiddos, and pursuing outdoor adventures. Interns work a four day work week on the two weeks a month that they are on the ambulatory rotation. After hours and on weekends, the intern who is not on call is considered unavailable, and truly has time off. We offer a generous CE allowance to interns, and pay a portion of the after hours fee to interns on solo emergencies. We have previous interns in equine specific practice across Canada, in mixed practice, and in equine residencies.

If you are looking to spend a year gaining supportive mentors, elevating your knowledge, and focusing your technical skills in hands on equine practice, reach out. Additional information may be found at AAEP Avenues.
